By InterAmerican Dialogue. The Inter-American Dialogue hosted a breakfast discussion about the challenges to regional security in Central America with Juan Daniel Alemán, Secretary General of the Central American Integration System (SICA). The session took place on Tuesday, February 15 from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. at the Inter-American Dialogue.
SICA, the institutional framework for supporting regional integration and human rights in Central America, has sought to address the growing concerns about security and citizen safety throughout the region. Alemán, who previously served as Assistant Secretary General for the Central American Economic Integration System and as Political Secretary of the Presidency in Guatemala, discussed SICA’s Central American security strategy and its upcoming regional security conference scheduled for June in Guatemala. Kevin Casas-Zamora, former Costa Rican vice president and senior fellow in the Latin America Initiative at the Brookings Institution, provided a brief commentary on Alemán’s remarks.
